Block Black Target Boss (Field Logic)

Away from the club I started with an eBay special foam target which is fine for a bow under 20lbs, over this and they will go straight through. For a portable target, the next jump up is to the purpose built target made from dense foam. These are generally quite pricey, and though widely available on the American market, still quite rare in the UK.

The target I decided on was the £49.08(inc p&p) Black Hole Target, but the only UK reseller is out of stock. This turned out to be a good thing as after a bit more research, it would appear the Black Hole target can't handle over 35lbs for very long.

From the same manufacturer is the Block Black Target. It's £82.38, so a lot more, but supposedly capable of taking hunting points which rip through most UK targets so should be a lot more sturdy.

First Impresions

It's light, but feels quite solid. The design is nice, it's very easy to tell the centre from a long distance so you don't really need to pin a target face to it.
The reverse side of the Target was a bit of a surprise to me, being that this isn't shown on Merlin's Website. It's a stag with what I can only assume is a life size heart?

Given this is an American product and archery in the US is largely aimed at hunting, I'll let this slide, though another target face would be much better for the UK market!

Size

I went for the 16" target, though they do make 18", 20" and 22". The reason being the 16" is the equivalent of hitting Red in a regular 122cm target. That's big enough for 20yd shooting even with a poor release.

I bought this as a portable target, one I can throw into the back of the car, or even strap to the back of the bike. So to put it to the test...

As you can see without too much hassle you can lug it around.

Penetration

Shooting a 40lb bow with carbon arrows, and they penetrate through the Black Block like this:

I've held up an arrow next to it so you can see how far the deepest arrow got. As the arrows slow down exponentially through a target (as the surface area touching the target increases yadda yadda...) these arrows have been slowed down more than enough

Any Problems?

Not a really major one, but the carrying handle is a dug out hollow in the target. It looks neat and is great for storage, but does make it awkward to handle. A proper handle like on Field Logic's Black Hole Target would be much better.

Verdict?

Though not cheap, it is good. Stops the arrows well, and other than the stag heart looks good. I would benefit from a better handle, but it's not a major issue If you have £82.38 to spend on a home target, then I would thoroughly recommend one.
